A proper burger is a celebration of good meat and restraint. Our Premium Beef Burger Patties are hand-pressed in-store from fresh mince and a balanced house seasoning — so your job is just to cook them right and build around them. No oats, no eggs, no gimmicks.
Makes 4 burgers
Ingredients
- 4 Premium Beef Burger Patties
- 4 good quality burger buns, brioche or seeded
- 4 slices mature cheddar or gouda
- 1 red onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tomatoes, thickly sliced
- Crisp lettuce leaves
- Gherkins, sliced lengthwise
- Mayonnaise and tomato sauce (or mix them for a “burger sauce”)
- Salt and black pepper
- A little oil for the pan
Method
- Take the patties out of the fridge 15 minutes before cooking. Heat a heavy pan or grill until very hot.
- Season the patties on both sides with salt and pepper. Brush with a little oil.
- Cook the patties undisturbed for 3–4 minutes a side for medium. Don’t press them with the spatula — you’ll squeeze out the juices.
- In the final minute, lay a slice of cheese on each patty, cover the pan with a lid, and let the cheese melt.
- Toast the buns lightly cut-side down in the same pan, catching any beef fat.
- Build: bottom bun, sauce, lettuce, tomato, patty with melted cheese, red onion, gherkin, top bun.
Tips
Want a smokier version? Cook the patties on the braai over hot coals instead. A knob of blue cheese in the centre of each patty before cooking (pushed in with your thumb) melts into a hidden pocket of flavour.
